Janice Baldwin, alto, graduated in Zoology. After several years of teaching Biology in London, the Caribbean, Glasgow, Sheffield and Aberdeen, the serious study of music began in this cultured granite city by the grey North Sea ... ie. a bit late!! It was here that Janice joined the Edinburgh Festival Chorus and had the glorious experience of working with most of the major conductors and orchestras of the world. Highlights of this time were the concerts and recordings of Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem with Barenboim and Fischer-Dieskau, Mahler’s 2nd Symphony ‘The Resurrection’ with Bernstein, and the Verdi Requiem with Giulini and Pavarotti.
Voice was studied with John Carol Case at the North East School of Music in Aberdeen and, as a first soprano, solo parts were gained in oratorios and operas with the Haddo House Choral Society, notably in Purcell’s Fairy Queen, sung in the open air with the audience well wrapped up and the cows joining in! The Elphinstone Consort and the University Semi Choir enabled the exploration of madrigals and early music.
On moving to Bath, Janice soon established herself in the musical circles there and was the soprano soloist in the Messiah in Bath Abbey, and for several years was invited to sing in the Leominster musical festival. She was also soloist and choral member of the Bath Cantata Group. However, vocal problems loomed!!! These were ‘dealt with’ by John Carol Case and under his kind and sympathetic guidance Janice emerged as a mezzo, moved down to first alto, learned a new repertoire and was relaunched!!!! Conducting and working with the voices of a local group, the Colerne Singers, led to being recommended to and accepted by AOTOS (the Association of Teachers of Singing, UK).
Moving to Luxembourg in 1986 enabled Janice to work with Pierre Cao as soloist and choral member of the Psallette de Lorraine, the Ensemble Vocal du Luxembourg, and Vox with Dafydd Bullock, whilst continuing to participate in master classes as she has done throughout all these years.
Janice now sings with the French choir Metamorphose in Metz and is kept busy learning to play the bass viola da gamba.
